Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light; Woods of Ypres

Rating: 95% “We were together, in a memory and we live forever, in finality”

w5Woods of Ypres began in 2002 as a Melodic Black Metal band by David Gold and Aaron Palmer. Grey Skies & Electric Light was the record that got me interested in this band. The music is heavy, melodic, well constructed and some feature a cello and oboe. I have enjoyed all of their albums, but this record is my favorite.

David Gold is a very talented individual. The music he composes and writes, I can say comes from his heart. The pain and suffering in his voice raises the question, if he predicted his own death or not. That’s what’s so sad about this record, is the fact that David Gold died in 2011 in a car accident shortly after its release.

Joel Violette, the other band mate also wrote and composed many of the songs on the record. He too is very talented. The two musicians seem to compliment each other. The record features the traditional Black Metal elements, but at the same time, you hear a change into the Doom Metal direction.

Every song on this record is good. But there are a few that stand out.  “Traveling Alone” is one of the best songs on the record. “But when I look around you I understand why you believe I see your evidence of God, all around me.” This song deals with the question of religion.

The last two songs on the record written by Joel Violette seem to be a fitting tribute to David Gold. “Finality” is a piano piece that is beautifully written.  “The choice was mine, to long for a time, that will never come, Though we leave the world apart, I, still went peacefully, Quietly, with you, still, firmly… in my heart” “Alternate Ending” is another piece that is written and one that is also seems to pay tribute to the band itself. “Back on the highway, under the moon, my final moments, Still wondering about you…”

Bottom line, this is one hell of a good band. All their records are amazing and a must have if you’re into Black Metal to Gothic Doom Metal.
