Visor om slutet: Finntroll

Rating: 90%

Finntroll-Visor_om_SlutetSo in 2003, the Folk Metal band Finntroll decided to pull the plug on electricity for one album and do an all out European folk record. The end result? One brilliant EP that the trolls  of Middle Earth would jam out to. This album features all sorts of instruments from acoustic guitar, banjo, flutes and some keyboard work. So, not totally an all out acoustic album.

This EP is wonderfully done. The music structure is patterned off from the traditional European folk of the north-land. At the same time, elements of the band’s folk metal influence is clearly heard. If you know of anything about Fintroll, this is what their music would sound like stripped down to tradition. However, imagine their roots here, becoming electric and heavy and then you have the current band. Polka is there main influence and one can easily hear it. Also, the entire album is sung in the Finnish language.

The song structures themselves were a long thought out process as many instruments are featured by the band. Each song was perfectly put together. Slow and faster tempos take you on a journey of middle earth to a time long long ago. The music is very atmospheric with harmonies of all band mates to give this EP a very epic sound. The song structures retain a good bit of modern influences from the metal world. This EP has plenty of good melodies. It’s folky, classical and has a good bit of that polka swing to it. It’s a good album to listen to when you’re drinking in a pub swapping stories of legends and traditions. There is a good bit of filler that I will warn you about as five of these songs are more or less interludes to the much bigger tracks. Highlights are “Asfågelns död”, “Försvinn du som lyser”, “Den sista runans dans”, and “Svart djup.”
