4 Way Street: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Rating: 85%

CSNY_4_way_street.jpgThis past weekend, I managed to pick up a few records at the antique store. One of them was a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s “4 Way Street” a double LP set. “4 Way Street” is a live album that was released in 1971. The first record is the band’s acoustic set, while the second album is their electric set.

The group was formed as a super group 1968 with Buffalo Springfield guitarist Steven Stills, Byrds’ guitarist David Crosby and Hollies guitarist Graham Nash. Buffalo Springfield guitarist Neil Young would join the group shortly after their formation.

Musically, side one is full of acoustical pieces and full of vocal harmony. Sound wise, the album sounds pretty good. It contains some raw compositions that gives the first LP a very folky sound in a coffee shop feel to it. I think that Neil Young steals the spotlight on this record. “Cowgirl in the Sand”and “Don’t Let It Bring You Down” to me are some of Neil’s best live vocal work.

Musically, side two to me is the best. I love the nearly 14 minutes of “Southern Man” which is a Neil Young song. I also think “Ohio” is another good song on the album. The band itself sounds great and the vocal work of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are really good.

Although, I am not a huge fan of CS&N, I am a huge fan of Neil Young. With CSN&Y CDs, I usually just transfer the music that Neil Young is on to my MP3 player and just allow dust to collect on the CD case itself. So at $5.00, why would I pass up one of the best live albums of all-time? I couldn’t resist. I only draw back is that I wish, Medley: The Loner/Cinnamon Girl/Down by the River” would have made the original cut, but it didn’t come out on this album until 1992 and now, I need to find this version of an outstanding Neil Young song.
