Nifelvind (Underworld’s Winds): Finntroll

Rating: 90%

Nifelvind.jpgIn 2010, Finntoll released “Nifelvind.” There’s a good collection of Folk influenced Death Metal on this album. The music is fun, very upbeat with tons of fast tempos along with the beefy choirs. This is almost like swing music. As with all of Finntroll’s albums, I was taken by the strong sound of instrumentation that one can hear in all of their songs. I like hearing the orchestrated arrangements. I also enjoy hearing the banjo, violin, and mandolin in particular mixed with the heaviness of the distorted guitar, bass ans drums on some of the songs. Speaking of drums, the drum lines are absolutely great.  Musically, this has a strong and huge epic sound which allows the harmony to showcase the music.

The musicianship to me sounds very tight. Vocalist Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns sounds remarkable. His style of the dirty vocals adds a touch of heaviness to the overall sound. The riffs and leads on the guitars is another selling point. The crunchiness of the sound with all of the weird time signatures really makes this album swing. It’s very enjoyable to listen to. You can compliment guitarists Samuli “Skrymer” Ponsimaa and Mikael “Routa” Karlbom for the huge guitar arrangements. Thundering along and keeping time is bassist Sami “Tundra” Uusitalo. Samu “Beast Dominator” Ruotsalainen whose drumming I’ve already touched on is what makes this album such a good album musically. However, the back bone of the sound on this album belongs to both keyboardists, Henri “Trollhorn” Sorvali and Aleksi “Virta” Virta. One cannot forget the brains behind the lyrics Jan “Katla” Jämsen.
