Les Voyages de L’Âme (The Journeys of the Soul) is the third album by the French Black Metal band, Alcest which was released early in 2012. This album, fuses Shoegazing and Black Metal for an adventure unlike any other. Shoegazing is a term that was used in the 1980’s which uses distortion and feedback with many of the guitar tracks.
The opening song, begins with a soft opening of guitar picking the strings. It’s then followed by the harmony of chords and soft vocal work. Neige has an equal balance between clean and dirty vocals. The harmony and melody of the music is very soothing, and, then all of a sudden, it changes to unleash what Black Metal typically sounds like with fast tempos and clean vocals and shrieks. I fell in love with the song “Autre Temps” when I first heard of it.
The record is all sung in French. But don’t that stop you. Why not? The Heavy Metal culture is what connects us fans worldwide. Musically, the album is well worth the language barrier. Production sound is very raw and and yet the sound quality is very good. For a Black Metal band, the guitar work is very extensively. Non distorted guitar chords are throughout the album. Structurally, for Black Metal, it works. A good balance between distorted guitars and heavily distorted guitar work.
