The Thousandfold Epicentre: The Devil’s Blood

Rating: 90%

The_Thousandfold_Epicentre.jpgLate in 2011, this album was released. When I first heard them on Sirus radio, I was blown away. It was like stepping back in time to the era of early 1970’s Progressive Rock with tons of Black Sabbath thrown in.

The musicianship is really good. Farida Lemouchi the vocalist is what really stands out. Her vocal style is amazing and fits in with those female artists of Goth Rock. The next thing you’ll notice the guitar and the leads that goes with it. Great bass and drumming all around.

The music itself is full of melody. Also, you’ll notice some of the progressive, goth, and psychedelic styles and influences. Lyrically, its about the occult, sex, and paganism. The best tracks are the opening track, “Die the Death”, and “Feverdance.”

So grab your witches brew, light up the night with a fire, and drink some wine, because you’re in for a pleasurable listening experience.

1. “Unending Singularity” 2:18

Box Set: Samhain

Rating: 100%

SamhainboxIn 2000, Glenn Danzig released the box set for his formal band, Samhain. Although, not much in the way of unreleased material, the box set basically released the Samhain catalog that had been out of print for several years. Although, I had three of the five albums in this box set on cassette, this was an awesome release for me to grab the day this was package as a box set. I paid $40 for this the day it came out, and now, you can’t buy this box set for under $100 and most of the CDs are again, out of print.

Let’s break down the box set. The VHS live recording it comes with, the sound and video quality sucks. But you do get a chance to see this band on stage in their prime. The comic book that came with the box set is pretty cool too! Other than that, the rest is CDs.

The quality of the CDs is pretty good. Some of them were remastered, such as “Unholy Passion” due to Glenn laying out new guitar tracks. It also contains some material that went over to the actual Danzig band. Such songs as “Twist of Cain”, “Trouble”, and “Possession.” Now, with that being said, there is a good amount of Samhain material floating around out there, that is not part of the box set, including a very early version of “Archangel.” I had to download that.

What makes this box set so special is the fact that you finally got a chance to covert your cassettes for CDs. That is what made me happy about this box set. My old tapes were so chewed up and beaten up to the point, that I wasn’t able to enjoy the music. That’s why I rated this as 100%. Samhain wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but this box set bridges the gap of the glorious Misfits and the actual Danzig band.

4 Days In A Motel Room: The Nuns

Rating: 85%

R-4078913-1354527039-3295.jpeg.jpgThe Nuns, I have had actually forgotten about. I first heard them back in the late 1980’s. This is when I was really getting into Punk and Hardcore Punk. After a while, I was more in tune with Hardcore Punk, Thrash Metal and Death Metal music and the Nuns were pretty much placed in the vault of my memory. So, while cruising Youtube, I found all these songs under the recommendation and that’s when I remembered this forgotten Punk band.

In the late 1970’s, the Nuns were rising above the California Punk scene with their blend of Punk, New Wave, later Goth Rock, and yes, some Pop. Their first record released in the form of an EP or single in 1979, saw some of popularity. By 1980, their debut record was released. The Nuns along with their vocalist Jennifer Anderson forged ahead to become one of the leading and influential Punks bands of the San Francisco Punk scene.

Throughout the history of the Nuns had numerous line up changes and a few reunions but, Jennifer “Miro” Anderson remained the only consistent member of the band. She passed away in 2011 from cancer. Her vocals are haunting, cold, and at the same time, good.

Nuns #12Although, “4 Days In A Motel Room” is more or less their greatest hits with some singles added to it, this album does showcase the band nicely. Many of the songs on this compilation album are for the most part very good. Lot’s of great guitar work and catchy riffs. Lot’s of catchy vocals and chorus.

“Do You Want Me On My Knees?” has a cool kick ass riff along with some very sexual lyrics. The music is very dark and the vocals are just as dark and sinful. The lead guitar solo which last for a few seconds is awesome.

There are several highlights on this album that justify’s why this band was one of the leading Punks bands in the San Fran scene. “Just Do It” has more of that New Wave sound to it and the vocals are more based on harmony. “Underground” is more of a Punk style with male and female vocals. “Savage” is really Punk from the drumming to the vocals. All around a good tune.  Not to mention this song has a kick ass guitar lead

That’s All There Is: Eerie Von’s SpiderCider

Rating: 85%

spiderciderIn 2006, Eerie Von released his fourth solo record called Eerie Von’s Spider Cider, “That’s All There Is.” He played all instruments, recorded all material and wrote all songs. So, Eerie Von is for the most part is a one man band. Eerie Von has been around for years, playing gigs with Samhain and Danzig. His musical styles are directed more toward Punk, Goth, Hardcore, and Heavy Metal. This album is directed more towards Punk music rather than his previous works.

The song structures are very simple and standard from the introductions, to the verses and the chorus as well as the bridges. The instrumentation is very good. As a drummer, Eerie has some very good upbeat tempos. As a bassist, he rides along more of the guitar section. With regards to the guitar, there are some outstanding riffs, and some solos that are very simple. His vocals have much improved on this album compared to the other albums. The melody flows very well from song to song. The production sounds pretty decent. I have always enjoyed Eerie’s music. He has proven that life exists from his Danzig days.

Bad Dream No. 13: Eerie Von

Rating: 85%

Bad_Dream_No.13.jpgEerie Von is the former bass player for Samhain and Danzig. After leaving Danzig in 1995, he began his solo career. His solo work is something that one would love to hate or hate to love. Meaning, there is no in between, either you like it or you don’t. It’s not Heavy Metal or Punk, it’s Goth.

Released in 2004, Bad Dream No. 13 is Eerie’s third solo album. This album has a lot of potential, although, the sound quality has a bit of background noise. Which is why I gave it an 85% rating. But at the same time, I feel that this album is one of his best solo records and is very enjoyable to listen to.

With regards to the musicians, well…it’s just Eerie Von. He plays everything from guitar and bass to the drums and keyboards. He even wrote all of the lyrics and as simple as they are, he writes using a lot of metaphors. Eerie even produced the album. As a vocalist, he is pretty good and doesn’t need to hit any of those high notes to get his point across. There is an eeriness behind his vocal style.

There are a lot of good points to the entire album. Musically, there is a good structure to the songs and they are simple, complete with some leads thrown in as well as slides. The music flows really good. Each instrument has a fair share of being heard. Everything is well balanced. The music is dark and yet in other parts its very enlightening.

I really like this album. I think that Eerie Von is very talented and since he is on his own as a solo artists, I think, with each forthcoming album, his talents will really shine through.
